Bagel and Lox
The bagel is a doughnut shaped roll of bread that, unlike ordinary bread, is boiled. Bagels are eaten with cream cheese, pickled herring, or lox - smoked salmon, another traditional Jewish delicacy.
Hamantaschen - Haman's Ears
Not a people to eat body parts, or even to consume blood, the closest Jews ever get (or inded ever want to get) to doing so is Hamantaschen. Eaten on Purim, this is a three-cornered pastry filled with poppy seeds, raisins and so on. Exceptionally tasty, very addictive, and very easy to make (pastry, slap on the filling, fold over to make a triangle, and bake).
Blintzes
Blintzes are eaten on Shavuot, where we eat dairy products amongst other things. They are pancakes with sour cream or apple sauce.
Cheesecake
Well, you know what cheescake is, I just thought I'd tell you that we also eat that at Shavuot.
Latke
The Latke is a potato pancake, usually eaten on Chanukah, because of it's being fried in oil, and of the great symbolism of oil in the Chanukah story. Some people like to make their own from scratch - I find the packet jobs where you add an egg sufficient!
Kreplach
Kreplach is a meat mixture surrounded by dough which is then fried. It is either eaten on Purim or the afternoon before Yom Kippur.
Gefilte Fish
Gefilte fish is white fish surrounded in bread crumbs or matza meal, which is then boiled. Eaten all year round - very yummy indeed!
